Any person who is not familiar with the operation of the equipment, is in poor physical or mental condition, or has not received practical training in safe operation is not allowed to use this equipment. . Improper use of a crane may result in certain hazards which cannot be prevented by mechanical means and which may be avoided by the exercise of intelligence, caution and common sense.
Safe operating practices include a program of periodic inspections and preventive maintenance (covered in other chapters). An important part of operator training is to make operators aware of potential obstacles/risks requiring adjustments or repairs and to bring these areas to the attention of supervisors to take corrective action.
