Enhanced
In the past, processors used complex, mixed instruction sets that allowed programmers to encode multiple operations in one instruction.
Traditionally, processors only issue and execute one instruction per instruction cycle.
This single-stream, complex-instruction approach allows the processor to achieve powerful performance without requiring large amounts of memory.
While keeping the structure and the above instruction set unchanged, one way to increase the workload of each instruction is to use additional execution units and increase data paths. For example, some high-end ones have two multipliers instead of one. We call those that use this method, because their structure is similar to that of the previous generation, but their performance is greatly enhanced after adding execution units. Of course, the instruction set must also be enhanced so that programmers can specify more parallel operations in a single instruction to take advantage of the additional hardware.
Enhanced type
The advantages of the enhanced type are good compatibility and similar cost and power consumption to the earlier ones.
The disadvantage is that the structure is complex, the instructions are complex, and further development is limited.
Structure
As mentioned earlier, processors have traditionally used a complex mix of instructions and flowed out and executed only one instruction in an instruction loop. However, some have recently adopted a more R-oriented instruction set and executed multiple instructions in one instruction cycle, using a large unified register file.
For example, the , , and 3 processor families all use the very long instruction word structure.
The processor takes an instruction packet one bit at a time, parses the packet into 3-bit instructions, and then directs them to its independent execution unit. In the best case, instructions are executed simultaneously, which achieves extremely high rates (for example).
The advantages of the structure are high performance, regular structure (potentially easy programming and a good target compilation system).
The disadvantages are high power consumption, code expansion-requires wide program memory, new programming/compilation difficulties (needs to track instruction arrangements, easily destroys the pipeline and degrades performance).
