The application of dry processing in the metal processing industry is first of all economic. When wet machining is used, the costs related to cooling and lubrication account for ~% of the parts manufacturing cost (see table). Therefore, dry machining has great potential to significantly reduce product costs. Secondly, it is environmentally friendly. The use of coolant is an important factor causing environmental pollution. The third is to improve the existing machining efficiency. When using traditional cooling lubricant for machining, a higher temperature gradient will appear on the cutting edge, which will greatly shorten the tool life. When the cutting amount is increased, the temperature in the cutting zone of the tool and the workpiece will increase accordingly, and the risk of thermal shock will also increase, which limits the further improvement of cutting parameters during wet machining. Dry machining significantly reduces the risk of thermal shock because there is no cooling effect from the cooling lubricant. Dry cutting is expected to further improve cutting parameters.
Based on efficient cutting
Dry machining will undoubtedly open up new application prospects for cutting technology. The goal of research and development of dry machining is to achieve complete dry machining or quasi-dry machining (processing with a minimum amount of lubricant supplied) on the machine tool. Achieving dry machining or quasi-dry machining involves many factors such as cutting tools, coatings, and machine tools. It is a systematic research and development project that requires coordination from many aspects.
