相传三国时期的名医华佗，不但医术高明，而且平易近人。有一次，一位布衣木匠，不小心碰伤了腿，来找华佗医治，华佗给他开了些药，并嘱咐药用完了再来。可七八天过去了，木匠一直没来，华佗便亲自上门看望，只见那木匠的伤更重了，木匠为难地说：“眼下我连锅都揭不开了，哪还顾得上治腿啊!”华佗听了忙说：“那也不能眼看着伤口溃烂啊!”自此以后，华佗每隔一天就给木匠治一次腿，直到木匠的腿痊愈。

　　木匠十分感激华佗，腿好后便登门来道谢。闲谈中他看到华佗的药都是放在许许多多、大大小小的布袋里，又占地方又不方便，心里突然闪现了一个念头，他就问华佗：“你们做医生的，得备多少味药啊?”华佗说：“有四百多味，但常用的就365味。”

　　木匠回到家里，经过一番精心设计，为华佗特制了一个用来存放中药的药橱。药橱上共有400个小药斗，当时每个药斗只放一味中药。华佗看了非常满意，从此以后华佗就把他多年来收集的中药材都存放到了那个木匠为他打造的药橱里，并在每个小药斗上标注了药材的名称。
