The main characteristics of enamel are for identification reference:
1. First look at the porcelain body. The porcelain body is thin, repaired regularly and intact. The porcelain is fine, uniform, smooth and jade-like. In terms of texture, most of them are small pieces, and those larger than one foot are rare.
2. Shape, mostly small pieces of porcelain for daily use such as bowls, bottles, tobacco bottles, and animal ornaments. Regardless of the size of the vessel, it must be solemn and regular, in line with the characteristics of Kang, Yong, and Qian types.
3. The bottom shaft is a pure white shaft, neither green nor yellow, and the shaft surface is smooth, clean and flawless.
4. Enamel color. The colors are extremely bright and soft, with bright main colors and rich matching colors. They are rarely pure colors but pastel-type coupling colors. There are many kinds of colors, seven or eight colors can appear on the same object, and there are as many as ten kinds of colors.
5. Color characteristics. Each pattern is made from a variety of colors. The surface of the material is smooth and glassy, and can sometimes reflect clam light, making it very beautiful. The glaze is slightly raised about one millimeter higher than the base glaze, and has an obvious three-dimensional effect. You can clearly feel it by touching it with your eyes closed. If you look at it with a ten-fold magnifying glass, you can see tiny openings on each small flower and leaf. The flake pattern is due to the mineral enamel material, so there must be flakes after firing. This phenomenon cannot be seen with the naked eye, which is also the most important feature. On the other hand, the pastel color does not feel bulging.
6. Painting and Decoration. The painting skills of enamelware are particularly exquisite. Most of them are strokes, which vary in different dynasties. For example, Kangxi's enamels are mostly colored ground, and the colors of the colored ground are red, yellow, blue, Green, purple, rouge, etc.
On the colored ground, draw peonies with twisted branches, large flowers with broken branches, longevity flowers in the center, long life without borders, chrysanthemums in the nine autumns, etc. The characteristic of Kangxi enamel is that there are flowers but no birds, and its color matching is worse than that of Yongzheng and Qianlong generations.
Yongzheng's enamel painting was relatively mature, with breakthroughs in technology and richer color materials. During the Yongzheng period, colored ground painting was used, but white ground painting was mostly used. White ground painting can better highlight the bright and bright enamel glaze. Yongzheng's enamel decorations are mostly landscapes, bamboos, rocks, flowers and birds, and are accompanied by corresponding verses in the paintings, integrating poetry, calligraphy, and painting into one, giving it a unique flavor and making it appear more elegant. Monochromatic painting was also popular during the Yongzheng period, such as using carmine, dark blue, or ink to create paintings in any color, which is quite similar to Chinese painting style. This is original and extremely beautiful.
During the Qianlong period, enamel paintings inherited the style of Yongzheng, but the craftsmanship was not as rigorous as that of Yongzheng. Because Emperor Qianlong had a special liking for pastels, he cared about and developed the techniques of pastels. As a result, enamel painting retreated somewhat, and works between pastels and enamel colors appeared. These transitional products also have their own high artistic level.
The enamel paintings of the Qianlong period mainly featured flowers and birds, landscapes, figures and Western women, and were accompanied by imperial poems. At this time, the rolling process appeared again, and with it came the very beautiful landscape of Jindi consecration
