A beaker is a common laboratory glassware, usually made of glass plastic or heat-resistant glass. The beaker is cylindrical in shape with a notch cut into one side of the top to facilitate pouring of liquid. Some beakers are also marked with a scale on the outer wall, which can roughly estimate the volume of liquid in the beaker. Beakers can generally be heated. When heated, they should be heated evenly and can be padded with asbestos mesh. Because the flame of the alcohol lamp cannot completely cover the bottom, it cannot be heated evenly.
Beakers are often used to prepare solutions and as reaction vessels for larger quantities of reagents. During operation, a glass rod or magnetic stirrer is often used for stirring.
