Properties White to slightly brown needle-like crystallization. Melting point is about ℃ (decomposition). Soluble in hot water, slightly soluble in cold water, insoluble in benzene. Decomposes in boiling water and releases carbon dioxide. The aqueous solution turns green when exposed to ferric chloride and dark red when exposed to sodium bicarbonate.
Purpose Protocatechuic acid has antibacterial effects. In in vitro tests, it has varying degrees of antibacterial effects on Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Escherichia coli, Salmonella typhi, Shigella dysenteriae, Alcaligenes, Bacillus subtilis and Staphylococcus aureus.
