Design Features

For a typical globe valve, if the yoke is in direct contact with the flame, the yoke will expand at a faster rate than the valve stem. Due to the influence of thermal effects, the valve yoke arm expands and the valve core flies out of the valve seat, which will cause serious leakage. A simple device has been developed that can be used to compensate for the effects of thermal expansion. When not in operation, the stem bushing is allowed to float above the yoke and loads the stem through a series of butterfly washers. Even when the valve yoke encounters high-temperature expansion caused by open flames in a refinery or chemical plant, the butterfly gasket maintains this load, forcing the valve stem assembly to lower onto the valve seat.
The fire-resistant valve has been tested and successfully passed the strict test procedures specified by American Petroleum Organization standards. Briefly, the procedure requires that test valves be placed side by side, then pressurized to % of rated pressure, and then placed in a fire for 10 minutes. The valve is then quenched with water and cooled to room temperature, and the above steps are cycled through to prove the valve's operability, followed by further pressure testing. Valves are required to maintain strict leakage limits both during and after combustion.
