On Monday (January), Saudi Arabia notified Egypt that the $100 million aid agreement will be suspended indefinitely, which shows the deepening rift between the rich and populous countries in the Arab world. Egyptian Oil Minister Mora confirmed the news.
According to Reuters insiders, after Saudi Arabia suspended the oil agreement with Egypt last month, Mora visited Iran on Sunday to try to reach a new oil agreement. But then Egypt's oil minister responded to the rumors and said he would not visit Iran.
Saudi Arabia has provided billions of dollars in aid to Egypt since 2006. According to a US$100 million agreement between Saudi Aramco and the Egyptian Petroleum Corporation, Saudi Arabia will provide Egypt with 10,000 tons of oil products per month for five years.
But Saudi Arabia is disappointed with Egypt's unwillingness to provide support in regional affairs, and the political situation between the two countries has become increasingly tense. Saudi Arabia stopped supplying oil cargo to Egypt at the beginning of the month, but Egypt stated that the contract between the two countries is still valid and is hopeful that oil supplies will be restored.
Egypt voted in March for a Russian-backed U.N. resolution on Syria after Saudi Arabia suspended the deal, which did not include a call to stop bombing Aleppo, which the kingdom has strongly opposed.
