Chemical properties Salicylic acid, also known as salicylic acid, is more acidic than benzoic acid. It is unstable to heat and is easily decarboxylated to form phenol when heated to ℃. Free salicylic acid is only present in small amounts in plants.
Usage: It is an important raw material for organic synthesis. In the production of pesticides, it is used to synthesize the intermediate isopropyl salicylate of the organophosphorus insecticides hydrophosphos and isosaphos-methyl, and the intermediate hydroxycoumarin of the rodenticides warfarin and rodenticide. In the pharmaceutical industry, in addition to being used as a disinfectant and antiseptic, salicylic acid also serves as an intermediate for a variety of drugs such as acetylsalicylic acid (aspirin).
