Petroleum resin is a general term for resinous substances that are polymerized by olefins or cyclic olefins, the by-products of cracked petroleum, or copolymerized with aldehydes, aromatic hydrocarbons, terpene compounds, etc. It has the characteristics of low acid value, good miscibility, low melting point, water resistance, ethanol resistance and chemical resistance. Soluble in aliphatic hydrocarbons and chlorinated hydrocarbons, insoluble in lower alcohols and ketones. Mainly used in the coating industry, such as petroleum resin emulsion to enhance synthetic latex paint, light-colored petroleum resin is used to make oil-based varnish to improve gloss and adhesion. It is also used in the rubber industry to use resins with low softening points as plasticizers and resins with higher softening points to increase the hardness of synthetic rubber. It is also used to prepare hot melt adhesive traffic road marking paint printing ink and paper hydrophobic agent.
