The earliest bronzes appeared in the Mesopotamia of Babylon years ago. The large bronze knife engraved with the image of a lion during the Sumerian civilization is a representative of early bronze ware.
In China, - years ago, it is equivalent to the legendary era of Yao, Shun and Yu. Ancient documents record that people had begun to smelt bronze at that time. Archaeological excavations at the Longshan Period sites in the middle and lower reaches of the Yellow River and Yangtze River have revealed bronze artifacts in dozens of sites.
Chinese bronze wares mainly refer to bronze wares made of copper and tin many years ago, referred to as bronze wares. Including cooking utensils, food utensils, wine utensils, water utensils, musical instruments, carriage and horse ornaments, bronze mirrors, belt hooks, weapons, tools, weights and measures, etc. It appeared and became popular from 2000 to Qin and Han dynasties, with the Shang and Zhou dynasties being the most exquisite. The first ones that appeared were small tools or ornaments. Bronze containers and weapons began to appear in the Xia Dynasty. In the mid-Shang Dynasty, the variety of bronzes was very rich, and inscriptions and fine patterns appeared. The late Shang Dynasty to the early Western Zhou Dynasty was the heyday of the development of bronze ware. The types of bronze ware were diverse, thick and solemn, the inscriptions gradually lengthened, and the patterns were intricate and rich. Subsequently, the bronze carcass began to become thinner and the decoration gradually simplified. From the late Spring and Autumn Period to the Warring States Period, due to the widespread use of iron tools, copper tools became increasingly rare. During the Qin and Han Dynasties, as pottery and lacquerware entered daily life, the variety of copper containers decreased, the decorations were simple, mostly plain, and the carcass became lighter and thinner. Ancient Chinese bronze ware is our ancestors' great contribution to human material civilization. Although according to archaeological data, the emergence of Chinese bronze ware is later than that of some other places in the world, but in terms of the scale of use, casting technology, and shape of bronze ware, In terms of art and variety, there is no place in the world where the bronzes can compare with ancient Chinese bronzes. This is also one of the reasons why ancient Chinese bronzes occupy a unique position in the history of world art and have attracted widespread attention
The color of the bronzes is very beautiful when they are actually made, it is a golden earthy yellow, because it is buried in the soil The rust turns green little by little. Since the bronze ware is completely made by hand, no two pieces are exactly the same, and each piece is unique
With the development of primitive society, the tripod gradually evolved from the original cooking utensil for cooking food into a ritual vessel. Become a symbol of power and wealth. The number of tripods reflects the level of status. The weight of the tripod marks the power. During the Shang and Zhou dynasties, Chinese bronzes formed a unique series of shapes: containers, musical instruments, weapons, chariots and horses, etc. The bronzes are covered with Taotie patterns, Kui patterns, or patterns that combine the human form with animal faces to form patterns of gods, reflecting the transition of human beings from primitive ignorance to civilization.
The single-edged bronze knife unearthed from the Majiayao Cultural Site in Gansu is the oldest known bronze in my country and the oldest bronze knife in the world. It was carbon-identified and dated to approximately 20 years ago.
This knife is .cm long and is made of a single mold. There are no parts that are only found in mature knives of later generations, such as the blood stop and the bamboo head, which are typical and representative in the history of the formation of knives.
