Remarks
The source is the root of the Apiaceae plant Angelica sinensis.
Plant form Perennial herb, tall ~. The stems are purple, smooth, and grooved. The basal leaves and the lower part of the stem are triangular, with three-pinnate lobes, the final lobes are oblong, pubescent on both sides, and the edges are irregularly serrated. The upper leaves of the stem are simplified into leaf sheaths. The compound umbel is densely covered with yellow pubescent umbrellas, small involucre bracts, pedicels, and white flowers. The double-hanging fruit is oblong, with wing-like lateral edges. The flowering period is ~ 2 months, and the fruiting period is ~ 3 months.
Grown in valleys and ditches or cultivated in grass. Mainly produced in Hubei and Sichuan.
Collect the seedlings in early spring when they have just sprouted or in late autumn when the stems and leaves have withered. Remove the fibrous roots and dry them in the shade or oven.
Character: The root head and main root are thick and short, slightly cylindrical, and long. ~, diameter ~., with several curved roots branching out from the lower part. The surface is grey-brown or yellow-brown, with longitudinal wrinkles, long transverse lenticels and slightly protruding fine root marks. The texture is hard, the cross-section of the bark is gray-white, with many scattered brown oil cells, and the xylem is gray-yellow to yellow-brown. The aroma is rich, the taste is bitter and pungent, and the tongue is numb.
